Crochet Challenge!! Day 4: Red

The theme for today was RED. It took me a while to think of a project I had completed that was mainly red. I had a couple ideas but the one I could find was this hat :) The picture below is from gobbler's knob on ground hog's day.

                  

Technically this was made on a knitting loom, but because it is yarn based and the only red project I could find, it will have to do. I was made of this really nice soft slightly shiny, dark red yarn. And was the second project I had ever done on a knitting loom, the first time i forgot to use two strands of yarn and it became more of a hair net.

Crochet Challenge!! Day 3: WIPS

On the third day of the challenge we're supposed to share a WIPS (work in progress).

Here is a blanket that I started for Alfredo, featuring all his favorite colors. I'm trying to incorporate a bunch of different stitches and so far I have 3. My favorite so far is the V stitch and the colors go surprisingly well together. 

Tomorrows theme is "Red", so we'll see what I can find...

Crochet Challenge!! Day 2: Last Completed Project

My last completed project was a set of charger cases for my and Alfredo. Radio shack was going out of business and he found a set of super cute portable chargers. I made a case for both of them.


The pink one is mine and is meant to look sorta like dragon scales...it was just testing out the pattern for future use. It has a draw string top, that can be tied to keep the contents inside.

The blue one is Alfredo's and has a B on it for his last name, as he requested. The charger fits snugly inside the square case and it buttons shut.

Crochet Challenge!! Day 1: First Project

I am participating in a fun crocheting challenge that I found on Pinterest. It is a 30 day challenge and the first day is to share your first project.

My first project was a super long chain that I crocheted all summer and that wrapped around my house multiple times, but since I unraveled that project to make this one, I'll show you this :)

Its a normal scarf made with multi colored yarn. Its funny because it starts out tight and then gets looser and bigger as it was made. You can see below that I put multiple stitches in the same hole and that some stitches were in between stitches instead of in the top. I use it during the winter because it still works as a scarf even though it isn't perfect. 

The challenge is from uss crafty. Id had been wanting to do or make a challenge for a while and I'm glad that I found one =) thank you so much uss crafty for making this challenge. 

Easter Bunny Crayons

      I am filling a bunch of Easter eggs for a hunt at my college next month. Its kinda hard to find something to put in an Easter eggs for college students. You need to find something they would actually want while also not spending a fortune. Candy is something people want, but its not healthy so I only filled about half this way. Condoms are a very popular option but are kinda tacky and not every college student is sexually active and therefore have no need. So I racked my brain for a couple of weeks and searched pinterest when I came across this pin from TipToeThrough.

     College students are a little old for crayons but we still do secretly like them. Now I've only got a few eggs left to fill, I'll probably finish those off with sun screen wipes and maybe a couple condoms, because it is college.

     I found the silicone baking mold at Walmart for $3 and the 64 pack was on sale for $2. I did some research and the silicone ice cube trays from Ikea can also be used. I was worried that the cheaper crayons would be too oily for this, because they are not good for crayon melt art, but they turned out just fine. Which means I could make another 24 crayons for just $2.

     I like to set out all the crayons to see all the colors that I have to work with and to make it easier to grab groups of similar colors, but this is totally just my preference. You then have to peal and then cut/break all the crayons into smaller pieces. I found that the smaller the pieces the better.

      This is what they looked like all filled up. I started with mostly red then orange and then through the rest of the rainbow throwing in some extra pink in at the end, but you can do it however you want =) You place this in the oven at 230 degrees for about 20 minutes, check on them around 10 and 15 because they look best when not over melted.

Here is a video of how easy it is to remove them, if they are completely dry and a video watching the color change as they dry. They should be cool to the touch, if not they will crack. One of mine did crack coming out and I actually just remelted it in the microwave. Put it in for 5 minutes and then it dried much faster then any of the others.

Yarn Bombing My Unicycle

         I've had my unicycle for a couple years now and I still can barely ride it. One of my goals is to eventually ride it as my main form of small distance transport. Unicycles are awesome becauase they are light, small, easy to transport, safe, cool looking, and fun. I was looking at it today and decided he needed decorating, if i cant ride him he might as well look awesome. So I took my two of my favorite things and combined them.

      Uni is now all dressed up with yarn and beautiful. I hope to be practicing as soon as weather allows. 

Baby Gift for my Cousin

           My cousin was expecting his first baby. So I wanted to make him a nice gift for the baby. Normally it would be pretty simple, a pastel or rainbow colored baby blanket, because where I live and where most of my family lives it is a useful gift. When I suggested this to my Aunt she reminded me that he is stationed in Hawaii and that even though they may use the gift it would be very rarely.

           I was then thinking of making a crocheted mobile, but this posed problems, because I did not know how they were going to hang it and my Aunt did not know what theme if any they were using for the nursery.

           I then set my sights on making some sort of toy. This is a little harder, because the did not intend to find out the gender of the baby. This ruled out any blue or pink stuffed animals. I then thought maybe I'd use that interesting camo yarn because my cousin is in the military, but I'm not sure how they'd feel about that. So that idea was also out.

           I was almost about to give up the whole idea when I thought of just making a simple color cube. Colors are good for brain development so I always try to make baby items colorful and I think this fits the bill. It also has a rattle in the very middle, so it makes noise as you shake it. I placed the sides so that each of the secondary colors was next to the two primary colors that produce it. This is easy to make because you only need 6 squares of any color(s) which you then stuff and sew together.

           Over all a very simple baby gift that I hope my cousin will like.
