Decorated Door for Halloween

So me and my roommate wanted to decorate the door. She wanted to go to the party store, but i wanted to try a more pocket friendly version. I'm in college so its very important to try and save money wherever you can. So I have a craft shoe box in my closet and two weekends back  I had bought a pack of colored construction paper, cause construction paper is an extremely useful craft supply and the whole pack of 96 sheets only cost 2 bucks.

So asked her why don't we make decorations instead. So we did =) and these are the results. I tried to use one sheet of each color. It makes you really think outside trying to use blue, pink, and purple for Halloween. I just took 7 pages and a couple hours. So it includes a moon, some bats, a blue ghost and a white ghost, a witchs hat with a spider on it, two Frankensteins, four pumpkins, a cauldron, and a "bloody" Boo

Created My Own Superhero, Then Crocheted Her

I was brainstorming Halloween costume ideas and had been thinking for a couple days when I thought of maybe being a superhero. Then I was thinking okay, but what would I be the superhero of? And then it hit me =) Her name is "The Yarn Bomber" and she has telekinesis, but prefers to use it mainly on yarn. So I drew out what I would wear if I was a crocheting superhero and this is what I came up with =) comfortable, non revealing, and functional.

Then I was debating what color to make her and her emblem, because color is a very big part of yarn crafting. I scanned the picture into my computer pasted the cropped pictures and printed out a coloring page. I took out my markers and colored in all the combinations I wanted to see in action. As soon as I saw the yellow suit I was in love with it so that's why 7 of the 8 of them are yellow. It's also my favorite color.

You can see below that I choose yellow and blue =) the emblem on her chest is felt that I colored with permanent markers. I made the pattern myself, which I'm really proud of  =) Her hair was actually the hardest part, probably because I'd never made hair before. Her little mask is actually one long piece of chaining and two shorter pieces sew onto the face.

I then add a ball of yarn to her hand and used 4 pieces of yarn tied and then spun around, because the head was already sewn shut, to make the mask look less like glasses and more like a mask =)

I made the ball of yarn the same way you would make a normal ball of yarn except I started wrapping the yarn just around one finger. Once the ball was stable enough and the size I wanted I tucked in the end piece so it wouldn't unravel. I stuck a small piece of blue yarn through the ball and her hand and tied them together. I then added a piece of yarn coming out of the ball, so that even if this yarn gets pulled the ball is still intact.

I got my yellow morphsuit in the mail on Tuesday so I should have my costume ready by Halloween =) Seeya Soon

Awesome Paper Star Usage

So in my last post I showed you the stars I learned to make in my cousin, Nikki in Stitches, class. They were sitting on my desk for a day or so when I realized what they would be perfect for. When we got here we had a plain door with just two yellow paper bricks with our names on them and my roommate Cristina hated them. So I've been trying to think of something to replace them for about 2 months. Combine that with the stars sitting on my desk and you can guess what happened

What you'll need is: The stars or any shapes you like, scissors, a compass or a round hole punch or circle cutting skills, and microsoft word or nice handwriting.

I simply typed out my name. Made the first letter size 84 font and the other letters a size 74 font. You can make it as big or small as you like. I then spaced the letters so I could cut them out as circles and not ovals. They need to have more space from the center to the left or right then half of the height of the letter.

This is what they looked like finished

I don't think I told you about decorating the door before so I'll explain really quick what my roommate did =) my roommate is very big on fashion and she especially likes the girls in magazines. We had a lot of half cut up magazines from when we did the magazine letters, which I showed in a post a couple weeks ago.

She started at the top and just taped page after page to the door in rows she went back after and filled in the gaps. There is about a half inch gap at the bottom, but i like it because it gives me a guilt free spot to hold the door open with my foot without worrying about hurting the paper. Best part is that even it you do rip a paper or mess it up in any way all you have to do is take the page off and tape a new one on.

Star Bunting with Nikki in Stitches

My cousin the awesome and kinda famous, Nikki in Stitches, taught an online class tonight that I had the pleasure be able to take. We learned how to make stars for bunting. All we needed was 2 squares of 6" paper and a spreecast account. She will have a couple classes coming up in the next few weeks, so if you are interested you can head over to her beautiful website: http://www.nikkiinstitches.com/. So this is what we made tonight =)

This one is made out of magazine pages.
Neat looking =) and as a bonus you don't
have to go buy any paper, which makes it
very dorm friendly

This is the first one I made. Using yellow and green origami paper

This is the one that my roommate made, using pink and blue.

Yarn Bombing

I've been wanting to yarn bomb for a while. So about 3 weeks ago as a birthday gift to myself I finally did it =) I started by picking a target, a pole in front of the building I live in. This way I would see it frequently and so could everyone else. Unfortunetly, since I live on a campus there is not any time when everyone is asleep and the coast is clear. Because of this I had to change my plans last minute and change to a more secluded location. The pole I measured was slightly thicker than the pole I eventually used so the yarn bomb was a little loose when i got it on.

This is a few pictures of me working on it right before I finished. I didn't take any pictures before this point because I forgot =) This is me sitting on the floor, on my yellow rug =)

Then I attached a note to it. Its just a folded index card that I punch a hole in using a hole punch. I then made a slip knot on the card and then made another slip stitch on the actual yarn bomb itself. This way it could not be removed as easily unless you have scissors which most people don't carry with them around campus.

You can see what both sides say above =) It rained two days after
it was posted it and the note fell off, but i found the note
and had 5 yes's in the like collum!!  =)

This is a picture of it all finished just as I'm getting ready to go attach it. I brought with me one long piece of black yarn, that I was doubly sure would be enough cause it's better to end with extra then to run out in the middle. Also I bought a large tapestry needle, that was already threaded and two friends =)

These are all pictures of it as soon as it went up. Just a Tip: You don't wanna wait until morning, even though it gives better pictures, because it may not be there in the morning and then you may not get any pictures at all =)

And this is the next day in the sun light so it's a better picture =) The yarn bomb is still up now and its been almost 3 weeks =) I may take it down to wash it and move it to a different pole soon =)
